The oil and gas sector is never far from crisis.

An energy transition is an opportunity to fix the issues that workers face.

You and thousands of other workers just like you should be leading this transition. Not the industry bosses.

Your demands, your voices, your future.

Why we need a just energy transition

The industry is facing changes

Declining profits, the need to shift to zero carbon energy and a lack of government regulation is letting bosses push the risks onto workers.

Conditions are getting worse, with increasing safety concerns, less job security and training costs shutting people out of work. This was made worse by the pandemic. And climate change means we need to move away from oil and gas.

A ‘just transition’ for who?

You might have heard about a ‘just transition’ away from oil and gas to renewables, but what does this really look like? What does it mean for offshore workers?

There are two ways the energy transition can happen. Either you and other workers guide policies with your skills and experience, or it’s left to the market with no protection for affected communities. We’ve seen what option two did to mining communities. We can’t go down that road again.

The Tools for the Job

Workers are interested in industries like renewables and decommissioning, but the support for training and job creation isn’t there.

A rapid and fair transition requires concrete policies and financial support to ensure that workers and communities benefit. As oil and gas workers, these policies will impact you. Your voice is important.

This includes:

  • Large-scale job creation in clean industries – jobs today, not tomorrow
  • Re-training and re-skilling workers
  • Safeguarding of workers rights
  • Redirecting current support given to oil companies to green industry and job creation
  • Ending new oil and gas exploration in favour of turbocharging decommissioning work and the green economy.

About us

We are Platform and Friends of the Earth Scotland, and we campaign for a worker-led just transition. Those impacted by a shift away from oil and gas should have more control over government policies, and employers should be held accountable to you. We want to listen, learn and work with you.

So far we’ve:

We believe any transition must have oil and gas workers involved in decision-making. We centre worker demands in our research and campaigning – what we lobby politicians for is shaped by what workers want from their government and employers.
